The disappearing truck driver mystery. There’s a trend in the USA that’s causing fleet operators a great deal of concern and it has the potential to extend and worsen the driver shortage and that will impact cold chain transport as much as general logistics.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the focus on drug and alcohol testing is taking large numbers of drivers who’ve been caught using these substances off the road. That’s a good thing, but there’s also a problem.

The FMCSA’s data shows that nearly 150,000 drivers are still prohibited from driving and most are not engaging in any sort of program or process to get behind the wheel again.

It seems that they may be leaving the industry to look for other roles where there may be less scrutiny but nobody knows exactly where they’re going.

So, while we are still short of about 60,000 truck drivers nationally, this continued drain isn’t helping.

We’re not suggesting for a moment that we should ease up on mandatory testing - a key element of Coldstaff’s managed labor service - but we have to find ways to retain these skilled and experienced drivers in the industry.
