PSA - OVH has recently seen an increase in cases of parvovirus in our community. Canine parvovirus is a disease that mostly affects young or unvaccinated dogs. It can be potentially fatal, even with treatment.
**The clinical signs of parvovirus can vary but generally include severe vomiting and diarrhea. Additionally, affected dogs often exhibit a lack of appetite, marked listlessness and depression, and fever.**
The primary source of parvovirus is the f***s of infected dogs. Dogs shed the virus in their f***s just before clinical signs develop, and shedding continues for about 14 days after clinical signs resolve. Susceptible dogs become infected by ingesting the virus.
**Vaccination is the best way to protect your dog against parvovirus! If your dog is not up to date on its parvovirus vaccination, we strongly encourage you to make an appointment with us or make other arrangements to get it updated given the rise in cases in the Oneonta area. We want everyone to have a healthy summer!
