Yesterday, in his first encyclical, “Magnifica Humanitas” (Magnificent Humanity), Pope Leo XIV made a historic apology for the Holy See’s role in legitimizing slavery and for having failed to condemn it for centuries, calling the Vatican’s record a “wound in Christian memory.”

Acknowledgement, apology, repentance, repair, and justice (realignment with love) are among the key components of authentic reconciliation, which is the 6th step in Kingian Nonviolence.

May the leaders of all religious bodies, nations, and other entities who approved, facilitated, profited from and/or were apathetic regarding the vicious, inhuman trade and enslavement of African peoples to build empire sincerely commit to reconciliation.
