Cold weather and snow come with real risks for dogs if you don’t pay attention.

Watch their paws. Ice, salt, and frozen ground can crack pads and cause burns. Rinse paws after outings and check for cuts or irritation.

Limit exposure time. Even cold-tolerant breeds can get hypothermia if they’re out too long without movement. Shivering, slowing down, or lifting paws are signs to get them inside.

Hydration still matters. Dogs dehydrate in winter too, especially when running or training. Cold air is dry and snow is not a substitute for water.

Adjust training intensity. Muscles tighten in the cold. Warm dogs up before work and avoid explosive movements without preparation to prevent strains or injuries.

Visibility and footing matter. Snow and ice change traction fast. Slips and falls happen. Control speed and environment.

Cold weather is manageable, but only if you respect it. Smart handling keeps dogs safe and working at their best.
