San Francisco dream-pop veterans Halou return with Coco, a shadowy reimagining of their 2024 EP The Butcher’s Bill.

Where The Butcher’s Bill captured the band in raw, live form, Coco pulls those songs into darker waters, recasting them as downtempo explorations that blur the line between remixes, dub versions, and entirely new compositions. Newly recorded vocals drift through fractured arrangements, turning familiar material into something intimate, elusive, and hauntingly immersive.

For longtime listeners, Coco represents Halou’s closest return in years to their roots as one of the defining downtempo electronic bands of the early 2000s.

COCO: THE THREE FORMS

On streaming services, Coco is a six-song mini-album with distinct pieces that stand on their own.

For the vinyl release, Halou extends a more hypnotic approach: each side of the record is continuously mixed into a seamless 16-minute excursion, dissolving the boundaries between songs and inviting listeners into a deeper, uninterrupted atmosphere.

Finally, Coco Complete is a single, continuous 32-minute composition available on limited Compact Disc and as a download on Bandcamp, designed to be experienced from beginning to end without interruption.

In this form, Coco plays more like a film than a traditional record. Each section flows seamlessly into the next, a narrative that traces the desperate hours beyond midnight on through to the hope that dawn can bring. The music moves through tension, uncertainty, and desperation, gradually opening into something more reflective and resolved as the night gives way to morning. A single, unfolding passage through the dark toward first light.
