Racial bias harms people of color in virtually every arena of Western colonial life, so it should come as no surprise that it shows up in eating disorder care, too.
In the media—and too often in clinical settings—eating disorders are portrayed as only affecting young, thin, white women. This stereotype isn’t just misleading. It’s dangerous.
It causes providers to overlook eating disorders in Black and Brown women—leading to missed or delayed diagnoses that can cost lives.
This is a clear example of how racial bias in the medical industrial complex harms marginalized communities.
But it doesn’t have to stay this way.
If you're a practitioner or organization ready to challenge these harmful norms and align your care with equity and liberation, I offer consultations to help guide that process.

Most healthcare providers receive less than two hours of training on the presentation and treatment of eating disorders throughout their education. Because typical representation of eating disorders centers on young, white, cisgender, able-bodied, affluent female patients, an alarming amount of people with EDs end up flying under the clinical radar, so to speak, and never receiving diagnosis or treatment - despite the fact that EDs can, and do, impact marginalized people.
This course will draw on clinical treatment in the field of eating disorders, with an emphasis on approaches informed by principles of social justice. The things you learn will help you to feel connected and empowered with access to further consultation, specific treatment ideas and tools to implement immediately in your own practice or clinic.
3 CE credits are being offered for this training! Learn more and register at https://marcellaedtraining.com/online-ce-training/.

Many clinicians discover, in the process of conducting their work, that their own client exhibits eating disorder behaviors, or in some cases, the client may suddenly disclose they have an eating disorder that’s previously never been discussed. If you haven’t worked directly with eating disorders, addressing and treating them can be anxiety producing. They can also become more complicated if you know an eating disorder is present but your client/patient refuses treatment.
This course will draw on clinical treatment in the field of eating disorders emphasizing social justice approaches. This course strives for you to feel connected and empowered with access to further consultation, specific treatment ideas and tools to implement immediately in your own practice or clinic.
