The United Nations Ocean Conference took place this week in France. Ratification of the High Seas Treaty was a primary focus of the summit.
What is the Treaty’s goal?
~ Protect international waters by establishing marine protected areas.
~ The target for the “30X30” pledge is to conserve 30% of land and sea by 2030. (Currently, less than 3% of the ocean is protected from harmful activities.)
How is it going?
~ As of yesterday, the High Seas Treaty has not yet been ratified by the required number of Member States, but significant progress has been made towards the 60 needed for the Treaty to enter into force.

It’s understandable to feel cynical in a world that is unjust and unequal. In his new book, Hope for Cynics: The Surprising Science of Human Goodness, Dr. Jamil Zaki makes the case for beating cynicism with hopeful skepticism - thinking critically about problems while honoring and encouraging our strengths with hope to build the world we want.
What gives you hope about the future of our planet? Let’s inspire one another to take action together.
