The concrete barge in the Hudson River off Nyack is a historic World War I era shipwreck.

Located about one hundred yards offshore from Village of Nyack Memorial Park, this structure is one of only two identical concrete oil barges ever built during WWI, when steel was being conserved for the war effort.

The barge was originally intended to be part of a waterfront perimeter for a proposed park expansion that would have included a restaurant and marina. It was scuttled too far from shore, and the project was abandoned.

Today, it remains in place as a rare and historically significant example of World War I era concrete shipbuilding in New York.

These images were captured after a major snowstorm, offering a clear aerial view of the barge’s form against the frozen Hudson.
