Mark served his country overseas, served his fellow former service members here when they returned, served his community as a Councilman, was a father, and a husband, and was most of all to me just a really great guy that it was my pleasure to know.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

SPECIAL STATEMENT FROM TOWN OF CLARKSTOWN SUPERVISOR GEORGE HOEHMANN

"It is with deep sadness that I announce the unexpected passing of Town of Clarkstown Councilman Mark Woods from an apparent heart attack at the age of 54. Councilman Woods was elected just this past November to represent Ward 1. He was a decorated retired NYPD Detective and Combat Army Veteran who served in Iraq. A graduate of the Citadel, from an early age Mark chose service to others as his life's calling. Beyond his town government position, Councilman Woods was also currently serving as Director of The Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Mentor Services at BRIDGES, a non-profit in Rockland County. The entire Town of Clarkstown mourns Councilman Woods and offers prayers and deepest sympathies to his wife Jeanne, son Ray, daughter Maggie, his mother, family and friends.

The flags at Town Hall, all Town buildings, and parks have been ordered to half-staff. A small memorial, with a condolence book, has been set up in the Town Hall Auditorium and will be open during normal business hours starting Monday, May 20th for those who wish to pay respects to Councilman Woods. Service arrangements will be forthcoming and announced some time next week.

The family is requesting privacy at this time. Please respect that and refer any questions to the Town of Clarkstown Supervisor's Office."

I would like to say I am in agreement with County Executive Ed Day, and against Albanyโ€™s endless efforts at erasing, and financially exploiting, the suburbs, and hope elected officials, and candidates for office, other than Ed Day, find the courage to speak to this matter.

โ€œIt has come to our attention that State Senator Andrew Gounardes has proposed the Faith-Based Affordable Housing Act, allowing affordable housing to be developed on residential land while bypassing local zoning requirements.

While I agree that we face housing challenges in Rockland and across New York State, we are fed up with the constant attacks by Governor Kathy Hochul and her allies on home rule. In fact, it would be refreshing to see support of existing local laws rather than constant assaults such as this.

It is abundantly clear that Albanyโ€™s one-size-fits-all approach does not work. Local municipalities understand the needs of their current and future residents best and are perfectly capable of creating the conditions that support appropriate housing opportunities. My administration will continue to support the towns and villages working to improve their local housing stock through events like our second Housing Forum coming up in April.

Letโ€™s not forget, while creating affordable housing is an admirable goal, bypassing regulations is extremely problematic. The New York State Department of State unprecedently deputized the County of Rockland to handling building and fire code inspections in the Village of Spring Valley due to egregious illegal housing issues. If local municipalities are already struggling to enforce Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code Standards which aims to save lives, allowing organizations to conduct development that bypasses zoning will only compound the issue.

As Rockland County Executive, and past president of a local civic association, I believe this proposal to be contradictory of the Constitution of New York State and will continue to stand firmly in opposition to any politically based plan that undermines New York State Home Rule regulations and municipal zoning ordinances.

My Administration will keep all our options open in order to stop this plan in its tracks.โ€

Election Manipulation Without Representation 01/28/2024

Well stated Ed Day, removing election years and piling local elections into national elections, giving constituents multiple pages of candidates to keep straight, is a manipulative power grab and shameless self serving behavior and more disgusting games out of NYC controlled Albany.

Candidates and elected officials endorsing this abuse of our suburbs should be punished on whatever Election Day our crooked Albany goons arrive at.
