“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves;
it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast”

Scripture -
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” - 1 Peter 5:6
Daily Devotion -
The beginning of chapter 5 in 1 Peter addresses the elders of the flock. They are to care for and watch over their people with a willingness to serve, not to use their position to control their flock. Both the young and the elders are called to be humble toward God, then to one another. God shows favor to those who are humble and lifts them up in due time.
Humility is interesting. One should refrain from calling oneself humble but should know how to exercise humility. Maintaining humility can be very difficult if we show a high aptitude or ability in an area, especially in leadership. The natural tendency is to control the direction of matters between people and a flock. God calls both elders and the younger to be servant leaders. Those who have humbled themselves get to higher positions with a humble heart because they know it is God who has lifted them up.
Prayer -
Dear Heavenly Father -
Help us be humble and wise, depending on Jesus in all that we do. He came to this earth “not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.” We chose Jesus as our example and give thanks and praise to God for the love we are given through Christ. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Scripture -
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,” — Romans 8:16
Devotion -
In his letter to the Romans, Paul explains what it means to live in the Spirit and how that transcends living in the flesh. Those who live in the flesh will be spiritually dead, but those who live in the Spirit will live because Jesus lives in them. By receiving the Spirit, those who put their faith in Jesus have been adopted into sonship and can cry out to the Lord and be heard. As God’s children, we are heirs with Jesus, suffering with Him, that we may also be glorified together with Christ.
There is always a judicial tension in sections like these in scripture. One implication is that our spirit alone cannot sustain our relationship with Him. We need the Spirit to empower us as we call “Abba, Father”. Those who have seen the Son have seen the Father, and the Father knows them. Even as we call out to God, we must understand that the Spirit intercedes for us and faith in Christ puts us in right standing with God.
Prayer -
Dear Heavenly Father,
We bow before You, knowing that as we pray, Your Spirit bears witness with ours that we are Your children. We cannot think of anything more mind-blowing than that. You love the whole world, and in providing Jesus, You sent Your Spirit to work among the church all over the world and in us. We give You praise, glory, and ask to be forgiven when we have fallen short. Help us live for Your glory, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
