normally i’d be debriefing yall on DJ experiences of the worst kind for other DJs to avoid, but this one gave me a moment of clarity.
ok.
this was what i played last night at Courtland Club .. vinyl 45s… can you guess what’s in these crates?! of course not… but i do.. its not organized but every record has its own impact whether its familiar or not to the consumer. i have a good idea of how i’m gonna play these records, but i won’t know what i’ll play in that moment till it presents itself. just before i started my set, one of the clients came to me and said she couldn’t wait till i started the music, and i told her in my DJ energy ‘you know what i do is very different from the ordinary’.. she said that’s exactly why she was there.
lesson learned / to be taught:
DJs do play in various ways besides the typical ‘same s**t every night’ scenarios that be debated.. but truth be told, when the consumer wants a different kind of entertainment, they are accountable to find that lane when DJs and promoters present it to the public. its not gonna be a ‘LIT’ atmosphere like most would expect, but more less a mellow chill relaxed kind of room to understand how it impacts what you’re seeking in being entertained.

thats what i do. i usually don’t get this deep about DJ stuff that consumers don’t understand, but you can imagine when a DJ has a brain freeze when the consumer understands exactly what they came for. rarely does that happen to me when i’m accustomed to being the one DJing in a room when someone requests for Drake while everyone else is in tuned to the programming. I’m guilty of making this DJ s**t look easy when it’s not by any means. real DJs know.. the rest have to learn that. i still am.
