What is an A-Record in the DNS Settings?
An A Record is a DNS record that links a domain name to the version 4 IP address of the hosting computer. It is the A Record that assigns a domain name to the IP address of a device connected to the internet. The 'A' in A Record stands for 'Address.'
When you type an address to access a website, send an email, or connect to services like Twitter or Facebook, you're entering a domain name, which is a series of words separated by dots. For instance, typing www.dnsimple.com takes you to the DNSimple website.
On our name server, the A Record points to the IP address 208.93.64.253. This means that when you request www.dnsimple.com through your browser, it directs your request to the server located at that IP address.
A Records have various uses, including setting up redundancy and backup options by using multiple A Records for the same domain. Several domain names can lead to the same IP address, with each domain having its own A Record. The specifications for DNS A Records are outlined in RFC 1035.
