Large international research published in the New England Journal of Medicine and the European Heart Journal found that beta blockers — given to millions after uncomplicated heart attacks — offered no measurable benefit for patients whose heart function stayed normal.

Even more striking, the data pointed to a signal that women taking the drugs may have faced a higher risk of death, repeat heart attack, or hospitalization for heart failure than women who didn't. It's a reminder that "standard for decades" and "right for every patient" aren't always the same thing.
