Forgot to take family photos this year, so we’re just gonna start using our DoorDash confirmation pictures instead.
Fun fact for today:
The phrase "hair of the dog"—referring to drinking more alcohol to cure a hangover—comes from a literal, and pretty gruesome, old medical myth.
Long before anyone was using it to justify a brunch-time Bloody Mary, people believed that if you were bitten by a rabid dog, you could cure the rabies by taking a few hairs from that exact dog, mashing them up, and placing them directly into the bite wound.
The idea was rooted in sympathetic magic and early concepts of "like cures like" (which is also the foundation of modern homeopathy). People genuinely thought the cause of the ailment held the cure.
The Shift to Alcohol;
The phrase officially crossed over into drinking culture in the 1546 when the English writer John Heywood used it in one of his famous epigrams, writing: "I pray thee let me have a hair of the old dog that bit me last night."
