The public, two-year open admissions college is an affordable resource for higher education, focusing on student success. Initially operating from leased space in Bloomington, the College's steady growth in services, programs and enrollment led to the establishment of a permanent main campus in Normal in 2000. For its first 19 years, the College was led by founding president, Dr. Jonathan M. Astro

The COUNTRY Financial Trail

What began as a vision for a more accessible campus has officially become a premier destination for the McLean County community. Through a collaborative partnership with COUNTRY Financial and a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the COUNTRY Financial Trail is now open at Heartland Community College.

This mile-long trail circles Birky Pond and connects directly to the Constitution Trail, providing an essential link for runners, cyclists, and nature enthusiasts. Beyond recreation, the project includes the restoration of 13 acres of native prairie, birdwatching stations, and an outdoor classroom that will serve as a vital resource for our natural sciences faculty and students. This space represents our ongoing commitment to public-private partnerships that enrich the lives of Heartland students and the community at large.
