Gamma Iota Sigma - Alpha Kappa Chapter

This weekend, members of the Alpha Kappa Chapter had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 2023 WSIA Extreme Risk Takers Symposium in Chicago. 🏙🤩 Students from 22 universities and around 20 companies were there! Our members had a great time networking with industry professionals and students during the career fair and round table discussions. At night, students got to show off their bowling skills at Lucky Strike and have fun at the arcade! During the second day, we learned a lot during information sessions as well! Topics included D&O, Environmental Risks, Celebrity/Concert Risks, and Claims.💼

Thank you so much to our very own Illinois State Katie School of Insurance for hosting this special event, Debbie Babcock for all the hard work she does, our Gamma members for helping, the WSIA Education Foundation, and all of the WSIA career fair representatives and speakers for making this event a huge success. Laura Henao is a Primary Casualty, Associate Underwriter at Markel . She graduated from Illinois State University in 2022 with a double major in Risk Management and Insurance, and International Business. During her college years, she was a part of multiple student organizations, including Gamma Iota Sigma, where she served as DEI Director; moderating The Power of An Inclusive Workforce panel last year. The Summer of Junior year, she interned with Munich Re in the Summer Leadership Development Program, and focused on the Public Entity space. Briefly following graduation, she started working at Markel as a part of the Undergraduate Trainee Program focusing on General Liability, and three months after she got promoted to Associate Underwriter.

Laura, is an only child, born and raised I Colombia, Medellin. In 2015, she moved to the United States, and now lives in Chicago, IL.

Laura is an active learner, and someone who loves to radiate positivity to everyone around her. Her passion of creating strong interpersonal relationships, has led her to be active in the insurance community, participating in multiple events and organizations around the Chicagoland area.
