Unsung 😄!!
A group exhibition up at Zeke’s NFK for the month of May! Save the date for the opening 😃 Saturday May 23rd 6pm-8!
“I am an Instrument of Revenge for Many Women” 12in x 12in acrylic on canvas is the piece I submitted!
My painting draws on the figure of “Diana the Hunter,” a name adopted by an anonymous woman in Ciudad Juárez who, according to reports, killed bus drivers after an email claimed retaliation for years of unchecked sexual violence against women. The message specifically accused bus drivers on maquila routes of abusing female workers during late-night commutes, identifying them as symbols of a broader pattern of vulnerability, exploitation, and impunity.
In a city marked by the legacy of femicides and systemic failure, “Diana” emerges less as an individual and more as a projection of rage, grief, fear, and unmet justice. Like the mythic Diana, she is imagined as both protector and avenger, a symbol shaped as much by collective desperation as by fact. Her existence is uncertain; her impact is psychological. She exposes a reality in which institutions fail, victims are silenced, and justice becomes abstract, forcing communities to confront the unsettling appeal of vigilantism.
This work does not celebrate violence, but examines the conditions that make such a figure imaginable, even admirable. “Diana” becomes a mirror, reflecting a society where fear travels publicly, where bodies are vulnerable, and where the idea of justice is both deeply desired and dangerously out of reach.
Check out Blonde Avenger on the podcast This American Life for a deep dive 🤓!
I initially heard of her when listening to the song Jan 10th 2014 by The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die
