Flash photography can be a powerful tool for illuminating subjects and creating dramatic effects. Here's a brief tutorial to get you started:

1. Understand Your Flash

* Built-in Flash: Found on most cameras, these are convenient but can produce harsh, flat lighting.

* External Flash (Speedlight/Strobe): These attach to your camera's hot shoe and offer more power and flexibility. You can bounce, diffuse, or position them off-camera.

2. Basic Concepts

* Direct Flash: The flash fires directly at your subject. This is simple but can create harsh shadows and "red-eye."

* Bounced Flash: Angle your flash head to bounce light off a ceiling or wall. This creates a softer, more natural-looking light source.

* Fill Flash: Use your flash to fill in shadows when shooting in bright sunlight. This prevents your subject's face from being underexposed.

* Sync Speed: This is the fastest shutter speed at which your camera can capture an entire flash exposure. Exceeding this speed can result in a partially black frame.

3. Techniques for Better Flash Photos

* Diffusion: Use a diffuser (a small softbox or even a piece of white plastic) to soften the light from your flash.

* Off-Camera Flash: Use a wireless trigger to move your flash away from your camera. This allows for more creative lighting angles and control over shadows.

* Manual Mode: Once you're comfortable, switch to manual mode on your flash. This gives you complete control over the flash power and allows you to experiment.
