HOPKINTON, MA — A 70-year-old Massachusetts man is facing multiple felony charges after police say a dispute over access to a residents-only boat launch escalated into a violent confrontation that left a 21-year-old man fearing for his life.

According to Hopkinton police, the incident happened Wednesday at Sandy Beach, where signs indicate the boat launch is restricted to town residents. Authorities say Steven Dana confronted a group of young men who were riding jet skis and told them to leave because he believed they were not residents.

Investigators say the argument quickly turned physical. Police reviewed video that allegedly shows Dana slapping one of the men before both individuals ended up in the water. Authorities further allege that Dana straddled the 21-year-old victim and held him underwater.

The victim, identified as Matthew Duffy, was using crutches at the time due to previous injuries, according to police. Prosecutors charged Dana with attempted murder, strangulation, and assault and battery on a disabled person. Dana pleaded not guilty during his arraignment.

Duffy later told NewsCenter 5 that he feared for his life during the incident.

Residents familiar with Sandy Beach expressed shock over the allegations. One local resident told reporters he had previously encountered an older man at the beach who attempted to tell people where they could and could not fish.

Dana was held overnight and was scheduled to appear again in Framingham District Court as the case moves forward.

A South Carolina detective is out of a job and facing criminal charges after police say an argument over microwaved fish escalated in a shocking way.

According to authorities, 46-year-old Michael DeBiasi, a detective with the Myrtle Beach Police Department, allegedly pulled out his department-issued firearm and pointed it at a fellow officer during a dispute inside the station.

The disagreement reportedly started after another officer heated up fish in a workplace microwave.

Following the incident, DeBiasi was placed on administrative leave and later fired. He was arrested and charged with pointing and presenting a firearm at a person, a felony offense under South Carolina law.

Officials have not said whether the gun was loaded at the time.
