I really enjoyed this conversation after a fun recent show in Ohio at the Midland Theatre! It's always special to reflect on the creative process and the journey so far.
Soul Roots, Modern Heart: A Conversation with Sam Mooney For those lucky enough to have snagged a coveted seat to the Midland Theatre’s sold out Stage Door Series show with Sam Mooney back in October, you’ll fondly recall Sam’s honesty,…

is one of my favorite artists of my generation and one of the biggest influences on my music over the last eight years since I first heard his stuff. I’m obsessed with old-school soul music, and John is one of the main artists who’s inspired me in how to bring together my pop sensibilites and interest in modern production with my love of music from decades ago. He’s a virtuoso on two instruments, a phenomenal singer, and has a superpower for writing great melodies.
So great getting to hear him again in Nashville! I can’t reccomend his music enough 🎶

I used to wish I could skip the first two months of each year, but now I’m not sure how I’d get through the other ten without them.
I’ve always really liked 10 out of the 12 months of the year. Spring and fall have the best weather, summers are always fun, and Christmastime is wonderful even with the cold. January and February, however, I would wish away. Maybe it was because of the cold, the short days, or the fact that these two months tend to be the slowest of the year for my gigging and travel schedule. It wasn’t until sometime in October of last year that I began to really understand the value of this part of the year. I was eight months into the fun but tiring 10-month sprint that March through December often feels like for so many of us, packing another suitcase, when I caught myself thinking “I can’t wait for this winter” for the first time. I realized in that moment that these are the months where I get lunch with friends the most, where I can binge-watch a TV series with Polly if we want, when I’m able to eat dinner at home most nights, work on the house, give the most time to my physical and spiritual health, or even take a quick trip to Chattanooga. So even though I still don’t love the cold that comes with it, I’m realizing more and more that what I thought made this part of the year boring actually makes it precious. Now, I’m really grateful for the reset it provides. Plus, it gave me time to start recording new songs, but that’s a different post for a different day! Here’s to learning to appreciate the exact moment you’re in 🍻
