Today, we join the Newark Abbey community in mourning the passing of Abbot Melvin J. Valvano, O.S.B. '56, who passed away peacefully on June 28, 2026. He faithfully served as Abbot of Newark Abbey from 1973 to 2022, dedicating his life to faith, leadership and service.
We give thanks for his life and keep the monks of Newark Abbey, his family and all who knew him in our prayers.
May God welcome him into His eternal embrace, and may perpetual light shine upon him.
Arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
Our newest graduates have officially taken their place in our alumni community. 🐝
Though they've moved on to their next chapters, the wisdom they left for incoming freshmen reminds us of a fundamental truth: you are never alone. 💛
