NYC’s currently listed Criminal Court judges handled 443,014 arraignments between January 2021 and December 2025. Overwhelmingly, those released were not rearrested before their case resolved.
While the overall rearrest rate is low, it varies widely from judge to judge. And these judges aren’t elected. They’re appointed by the sitting NYC mayor to 10-year terms, which means one mayor can reshape the bench. Mayor Mamdani alone is expected to appoint or reappoint 48 of these judges in his first term.
Tracking this now matters, because the landscape is about to change. As Rikers Island heads toward closure and is replaced by four smaller borough-based jails with far less capacity, pretrial release faces new pressure.
Setting a baseline today is how we’ll tell a real shift from noise later.

In NYC, there are almost as many millionaires as there are New Yorkers without a home.
The DSA built a movement on comparisons like these, and the inequality behind them is real. Too much at the top, too little at the bottom is a clean, simple, and powerful story.
Tomorrow is the test: ten candidates on the ballot, and a referendum on how far the DSA can go.
Spirit Airlines is bankrupt and its top assets are up for sale, including its 22x LaGuardia flight slots worth $87 million.

Is the Hampton Jitney a good business? Better than you’d think: a $3.3M operating surplus, no public subsidy, and a near-monopoly for bus service to the East End.
But! The real story is why it exists. The LIRR’s electric trains stop short of the East End, leaving a slow, infrequent diesel crawl to the Hamptons that made a bus service viable.

But the real story is why it exists.
The LIRR’s electric trains stop short of the East End, leaving a slow, infrequent diesel crawl to the Hamptons that a bus easily beats.
The MTA is piloting 30-second audio ads in its stations.
But for what? Ads barely dent a $21 billion budget.
