The Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, also known as the Agony in the Garden, is one of the most profound moments in the New Testament and a recurring subject in icons depicting the life of Christ.

Following the Last Supper, Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, fully aware of the suffering that awaited Him. In a moment of deep human vulnerability, He asked the Father if the burden could be taken from Him. As Peter, James, and John fell asleep despite His request to stay awake, Christ witnessed the weakness of human nature. Strengthened by divine support, He accepted His mission and faced the events ahead with faith, courage, and dignity.

This powerful scene has inspired icon painters for centuries, symbolizing both Christ's humanity and His unwavering obedience to the will of God.

The scene of Christ before Caiaphas captures one of the most dramatic moments in the Passion narrative. Brought before the Jewish high priest and the Sanhedrin during a hurried nighttime trial, Jesus faced condemnation despite the absence of justice or due process.

For Christians, this event symbolizes far more than an unjust trial. It marks the fulfillment of divine prophecy, as Christ willingly accepted suffering, humiliation, and ultimately crucifixion to accomplish the mission of humanity's salvation. The scene continues to inspire reflection on faith, sacrifice, mercy, and the enduring triumph of truth over injustice.

Saint Charalambos is one of the most venerated saints in the Orthodox tradition. Icons depicting him often include a border scene illustrating a related biblical legend involving the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus and his courtiers, who are lifted into the air by a violent windstorm after mocking Christ.

In this narrative, the aged Saint Charalambos—often shown as a 113-year-old martyr who endured severe persecution—refuses to renounce his faith despite imperial pressure. When the emperor expresses doubt in Christ and challenges Him to descend to earth, an earthquake and powerful storm are said to erupt, lifting the emperor and his companions off the ground.

According to the tradition depicted in icons, only the prayers of Saint Charalambos save them from destruction and restore them to safety, demonstrating divine mercy and the power of faith.
