The term “taxicab” was coined when Harry Allen of the New York Taxicab Company made a contraction of “taximeter cabriolet.” Allen imported the first 600 gas-powered New York taxicabs from France.
By the 1950s, the taxi industry had grown from its humble beginnings to become an integral part of the urban transportation system in the United States. At this time, it was estimated that there were around 12,000 taxis servicing New York City alone.
