New Case Study: Torra Conservancy, Namibia 🇳🇦

Can community-led conservation unite a displaced population and local communities to heal the land? Torra Conservancy, a pioneer in Namibia's arid Kunene region, proves it is possible.

The community's history is deeply intertwined with the landscape. In the 1970s, under South African apartheid rule, the Riemvasmaak community was forcibly relocated to these hyper-arid lands, sharing the territory with the local Damara people and recent immigrants. Facing severe droughts and rampant poaching in the 1980s, these diverse groups united to protect their shared home.

In a historic milestone, Torra became the first community in Namibia to enter a joint venture with a private enterprise. Opening the award-winning Damaraland Camp, they transformed wildlife guardianship into a thriving ecotourism economy—proving that environmental justice and sustainable livelihoods go hand in hand.

New Case Study: Dayak Iban Sungai Utik Longhouse, Indonesia 🇮🇩

How can a single community protect millions of tons of carbon from industrial expansion?

In West Kalimantan, Indonesia, the Indigenous group Dayak Iban Sungai Utik Longhouse—a 2019 winner—has spent 40 years fighting for legal recognition of its ancestral lands.

Living together in a single, historic 216-meter-long traditional longhouse, this community manages 9,504 hectares of forest according to ancient Indigenous laws. Their guardianship has:
🔵 Defended ancestral lands against corporate interests.
🔵 Safeguarded an estimated 1.31 million tons of carbon.
🔵 Secured a self-sufficient supply of food, medicine, and clean water for future generations.

The Sungai Utik forest guardians prove that when Indigenous rights are recognized, the whole planet wins.
