DRLA congratulates Steve Kauffman on his retirement after over 47 years of dedicated service to Disability Rights Louisiana and Louisiana’s disability community.

As the 2026 legislative session comes to a close, we celebrate Steve’s decades of work as a fixture in our State Capitol, fiercely and skillfully advocating for the rights of people with disabilities throughout Louisiana since joining our staff in 1978. During his career, Steve served as a voice for our community in the State Legislature, at key policymaking committee meetings, and throughout our agency sharing his expertise and attention to issues that most impact our community. Everyone who has met Steve is familiar with his patented brand of humor and insight that he brings along every step of the way.

Among his many achievements, Steve was integral in securing the funding for our CLOP (Community Living Ombudsman Program) many years ago. This work led to the protection of many thousands of group home residents over the last several decades.

Over the years, Steve has been such an important part of our work, bringing incredible knowledge, expertise, commitment, and heart to everything he’s done. His advocacy has made a real difference, and his presence, experience, perspective, and institutional knowledge will be deeply missed.

Thank you, Steve Kauffman, for your years of knowledgeable and dedicated service!
