During the 1995 Nashville sessions with the area’s legendary session players, the tracklist was completely fluid. An early studio lineup shared by producer Ben Vaughn shows that the album started out with a full dozen songs, though “Japanese Cowboy” was not in the lineup just yet. At this point in development, “Powder Blue” was still spelled “Powder Bleu,” and lost cuts like “I’ve Got No Darkside” and “So Long Jerry” were still actively in the running. The full story of those sessions finally comes to light on the upcoming Deluxe Edition of 12 Golden Country Greats dropping July 31st, which expands the album into a massive 36-track collection. Ahead of leaving for Nashville to cut 12 Golden Country Greats, Gener and Deaner were busy working on a whole set of pre-album demos. “Bad Day in Brownsville” was tracked back in 1995 in the thick of those early sessions. There are no notes left on the missing tracks, but they absolutely rip. There’s a whole lot more tape where this came from.
