Apply citrus fertilizer as soon as you see growth. Alternatively, you can also use 8-3-9 during the growing season. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the amount and timing of fertilizer application.

Water the plant thoroughly and wait until the top 1 to 2 inches of soil is dry before moving on to the next watering schedule. Depending on your climate, you may need to water the plant more frequently or less frequently. Do not keep the soil soggy as this will cause the roots to rot.

Keep the mulch at least 3 inches away from the tree trunk to prevent it from pushing up against the softwood and causing rot.

Mulching
Place a 2-inch layer of mulch about 3 feet in diameter around the tree. Straw, grass clippings or bark can be used to help retain moisture and keep roots cool in the summer heat.
