Let's talk sew in extensions!

Sewing in wefts of hair is one of the oldest methods around when it comes to extensions. Weft extensions have been around for a long time but their popularity has skyrocketed over the last couple of years.

Seeing all of these “hand-tied weft” extension makeovers are truly stunning! But with that being said, there is a common misconception that has some clients confused when requesting this type of service.

What you're requesting is a sew-in extension service. The confusion comes from the name of the wefts. “Hand-tied” refers to the way that the hair extensions themselves are made, not the way they are installed.

Hand-tied wefts are produced by the hair being individually hand-tied onto a hand-sewn weft by an experienced technician. This ensures that the hair is more strongly secured & does not shed, making the hair extensions last longer. They are also thinner, flatter, & more flexible than machine-tied wefts, allowing the hair extensions to lay closer to the scalp & provide a more natural look & feel.

In addition, it is recommended that hand-tied wefts are not cut to any desired length. Doing so will cause the weft to unravel & cause shedding. Hand-tied wefts are typically already packaged into smaller widths & installed accordingly.

Machine-tied wefts are exactly as they sound. Loose hair is fed through a machine & sewn together, creating a track. Machine-tied wefts are usually thicker & a little bulkier than hand-tied wefts, but are sturdier & can handle many different types of installation methods. They are packaged as one long weft & designed to be cut with minimal shedding into the desired lengths needed for the installation. The wefts are produced by using an industrial sewing machine to attach hair to the seam.

Which one is for me?

Just like with any other form of extension work, the canvas that you are starting with and what the end goal is to determine the best method for the results you are looking to achieve.

Life of a hairstylist:

8:30 AM: Get to the salon while chugging my latte.

9:00 AM: Start client number one, yesterday’s towels, and drink #2.

11:00 AM to 4:00 PM: A chaotic blur. How many clients did I have? How much water did I drink? Did I even eat anything?

5:00 PM: Finish my last client. Clean up the bowls, bottles, brushes, and towels from the day. Zone out. Close up shop.

6:00 PM: Get home finally. Realize I’m starving and, in fact, did not eat anything at work. Make dinner, feed the family, and clean up.

8:00 PM: Put my son to bed.

8:30 PM: Reply to the 20 messages from clients I missed throughout the day.

9:00 PM: Bedtime.

It's a lot of work when you’re on your own behind the chair. I take on the role of owner, manager, receptionist, stylist, cleaning lady, mom, and fiancé.

It's 100% worth it to do what I love and provide the best experience possible for my amazing clients! ♡

Do anyone else’s days feel like this?
