Recently Firefighter/Paramedic Chris Fawcett was selected to participate at the Counterterrorism Operations Support (CTOS) Center for Radiological/Nuclear Training resident course at the Nevada National Security Site in partnership with FEMA. The training was conducted at the WMD Incident Exercise Site, also known as the T-1 Site, a truly unique environment where four nuclear devices were detonated between 1952 and 1957. Today, the site still contains residual radiological conditions, radioactive debris, and sealed sources used to create realistic training scenarios, offering an unmatched setting for hands-on learning in radiological and nuclear preparedness. Opportunities like this help ensure our members remain well trained, mission-ready, and prepared to serve our community.
Way to go Chris! This is an incredible opportunity and we are incredibly lucky to have Chris bring back information to our department.

Monday, our members joined thousands of firefighters and first responders in honoring fallen firefighter Bob Kilduff. The sheer number of people who came together in support was overwhelming and deeply moving.
Moments like these remind us that while we may serve in different communities, we are one family. Our thoughts remain with the firefighter’s loved ones, friends, and department during this difficult time.

Land of the free, because of the brave. Local 1706 extends our deepest gratitude to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Today, members of the Needham Fire Department attended the town’s Memorial Day services to stand alongside our community in honoring those who gave their lives in service to our nation. One message that resonated deeply with us today was that Memorial Day is not about politics or division, it is about remembrance. It is about honoring the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who gave everything for the freedoms we enjoy today.
This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women from Needham who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their courage, sacrifice, and dedication to protecting others will never be forgotten.
Among them was Needham firefighter Frank W. Scotton, who served his community before serving his country. Pvt. Scotton worked as a fireman for the Town of Needham prior to enlisting at Fort Devens on April 25, 1944. He was killed in action on December 29, 1944, during World War II. His sacrifice stands as a lasting reminder of the extraordinary courage displayed by members of both the military and fire service.
Today, we honor all of Needham’s fallen brave:

We also remember Captain Joseph R. Fandrey, a United States Marine Corps helicopter pilot from Needham who was killed on May 10, 1996. Captain Fandrey was the brother of Needham Fire Lieutenant Fandrey, and his legacy remains deeply connected to the Needham Fire Department family.
May we never forget those who gave their lives for our freedom.
