Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence's 2026 AI Index highlights a striking gap:
• ~80% of students are already using AI for schoolwork
• Only ~6% of teachers say their school’s AI policies are clear
That gap is already playing out in classrooms across the country. The question is no longer whether AI belongs in education—it’s how we support educators and students in using it responsibly, transparently, and meaningfully for learning.
What stands out is not just the urgency, but the opportunity. Schools that invest in clear guidance, teacher confidence, and AI literacy are helping students build durable skills—critical thinking, problem-solving, and responsible use of emerging tools.
This is a reminder that policy, professional learning, and classroom practice need to move together.

A new National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report underscores a growing need in K–12 education: data and computing can’t be taught in isolation.
The report emphasizes integrating these skills across subjects like math and science, starting in early grades and building over time, to better reflect how students will use computing and data in the real world.
It also highlights the importance of supporting educators through professional learning so they feel confident bringing these concepts into instruction: https://www.nationalacademies.org/news/integrating-data-and-computing-into-k-12-education-is-critical-and-requires-coordinated-approach-to-be-effective-says-new-report
