The food that enters your body is fuel. It powers and builds the most complex and beautiful creation there is: the human body. Food is not a space filler. The stomach is not just an empty vessel to be filled. But that is how we have spent the last 70 years or so treating food and eating. We have accepted that any chewable and swallowable thing that doesn’t cause immediate harm can be counted as food (here’s looking at you, highly processed food) and as such we have missed so much of the nuance of the fuel that food provides; one key overlooked aspect being micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Hundreds if not thousands of subtle bodily functions rely on adequate supplies of minerals such as magnesium, zinc, calcium, iron, and since so many of us do not eat a diversified real food diet and do not drink mineral-rich water, we are lacking in those necessary minerals and a whole cascade of consistent issues, from constant low energy to poor sleep to digestive issues to frequent illness, result.
