“How far has the Lord taken our sins from us? Farther than the distance from east to west!” (Psalm 103:12, CEV)
Am I forgiven?
After Jesus rose from the dead he instructed his disciples to proclaim the forgiveness of sins to the whole world, beginning in Jerusalem. To forgive means to send away, which is what the Lamb of God did when he went to the cross. He carried our sins and bore them away. Forgiveness is not something God does; it’s something he’s done. Past tense.
Finished. Complete. Job done.
The apostles travelled the world proclaiming the forgiveness of sins. They encouraged people to receive the forgiveness provided by Jesus.
“Little children,” said John, “I write to you because your sins are forgiven.”
“My friends,” said Paul in Asia Minor, “I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.”
However, some people didn’t like this message of free forgiveness, and they drove Paul out of town. Even today there are those who say only some of your sins are forgiven. “God has forgiven your past sins, but your current and future sins demand payment.”
But if the blood of Jesus did not pay for all your sins, what will? Forgiveness is not something you earn through acts of piety or penance. Nor is it a debit card to draw upon as though God’s grace was locked away.
The forgiveness Jesus spoke of is a gift to receive and in Christ you have it.

If you are battling addiction today, I want you to hear something that may be difficult to believe right now: addiction will not have the final say in your life. The cravings may feel strong. The struggle may feel exhausting. The setbacks may have convinced you that nothing will ever change. But your story is not being written by addiction. Your story is being written by Jesus Christ.

One of the cruelest things addiction does is convince you that it is your identity. After enough failures, enough relapses, enough shame, and enough disappointment, you can begin introducing yourself by your struggle instead of by who God says you are. But addiction is not your identity. It is a battle. It is not your name. It is not your future. It is not your destiny.

The enemy wants you to believe that because you have struggled for years, you will struggle forever. He wants your past to become a prophecy over your future. He wants you to look at every failure and conclude that freedom is impossible. But the gospel is built upon the reality that Jesus specializes in doing what seems impossible.

The cross is proof that Jesus entered the darkest places of human brokenness and emerged victorious. There is no chain stronger than His grace. There is no prison deeper than His reach. There is no addiction more powerful than the blood He shed for you. What feels impossible to you is not impossible for Him.

Romans 6:14 says, “For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.” Notice the promise. Sin will not have dominion over you. The verse does not say temptation will never come. It says sin will not be your master. Through Jesus Christ, a new authority has entered your life.

The Greek word “kurieuo” means to rule, dominate, or exercise lordship over someone. Addiction may have acted like a master in your life for a long time, but it is not your true master. Jesus is Lord. The struggle may feel powerful, but it is not more powerful than the Savior who lives within you.

Many people trapped in addiction live under crushing shame. They hate what they are doing. They make promises to themselves. They vow never to go back. Then when they stumble, the shame becomes even heavier. But shame has never produced freedom. It only drives people deeper into hiding. Grace is what brings healing because grace brings you into the light.

The finished work of Jesus means you can come boldly to God even while you are struggling. You do not have to clean yourself up before approaching Him. You do not have to pretend everything is okay. You can come exactly as you are. Jesus already knows every weakness, every temptation, every failure, and every fear. Yet His arms remain open.

Perhaps you have tried programs, accountability groups, counseling, prayer, and every method you could think of. Those things can be valuable tools. But never forget that your ultimate hope is not in a program. Your ultimate hope is in a Person. Freedom is not found by staring at your addiction. Freedom is found by beholding Jesus.

Second Timothy 2:13 says, “If we are faithless, he remains faithful.” What a powerful promise. There may be moments when you feel weak, discouraged, and exhausted. There may be days when your faith feels small. But Jesus remains faithful. His commitment to you is not based upon the strength of your grip on Him. It is based upon the strength of His grip on you.

One day you will look back and realize that Jesus was working even when you could not see it. The seeds He was planting. The healing He was bringing. The freedom He was building. The hope He was restoring. What feels like a hopeless struggle today can become a testimony tomorrow of His faithfulness and grace.

So do not give up. Do not surrender to despair. Do not believe the lie that addiction gets the final word. Jesus gets the final word. The cross gets the final word. Grace gets the final word. Redemption gets the final word. Your failures do not define you. Your addiction does not define you. Christ defines you. And because He lives, there is hope for your future. Addiction may be part of your story today, but through the finished work of Jesus Christ, it will not have the final say in your life.
