Traditional Sound Therapy
A trance-like state of deep relaxation can be experienced in as little as five minutes as the body's water resonates sympathetically with these healing sounds. Listening to singing bowls close up, feeling the sound waves course through your body or the steady rhythm of my drum and trying to work your to do list or contemplate a list of worries or a five-year plan are impossible. SLEEP
-----------
Every mortal's Eternal question, at least during mortality.
I can only speak for what's working for me now.
An injury from a 1998 car accident left me with a tendency towards a chronic stiffness in my lower back and left hip that is a blessing in disguise:
If I want to live a pain-free life, there's certain practices for me. One of them is sleep. In my case, less is more.
However much I sleep, I will try to leave the word "tired" or "sleepy" out of the words I think or utter. An old karate instructor swore "self talk" was the secret to The Sleeping Beast inside all of us. He believed that when a person talked about it or made a point of complaining about it, the lack of sleep, that, he said, was the problem. Complaints like:
"I only got 3 hours of sleep last night!"
"The dog kept me up all night!"
etc.
All maybe true, but he said talking about it is what caused the suffering. He said it was possible to stay awake and not suffer, especially just for one day. If a person is happy, he said and you're enjoying yourself, you'll be fine. I told me to try not dwell on it, from a conditioned response, and to see how it worked for me.
Experiment, he said. "You're body is your laboratory."
Complaining, he said, was the Main Drain.
He proclaimed himself a BRIEF Sleep champion and gave me list of celebrated "Brief Sleepers" who had led productive, but otherwise normal, quirky, imperfect lives. Sleep, he said, is overrated.
I've read the 8-hour sleep night is a recent invention centered around agrarian lifestyles, which, an urban living choice has removed me from, for the most part.
I ain't workin' a farm or raising kids to work one around a school schedule.
smile emoticon
No matter how much I sleep, to keep pain at bay, I eat a plant-based diet, which includes some cooked and some raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, etc.
Now, Instructor Tom might have been a champion "brief sleeper," but, at 24, he was still cruisin' on youth and hadn't yet experimented in the laboratory of his body with current diet and age and a more sedentary lifestyle to see how his pizza and burger and fries and soda foods worked in a 50-year old body that, in my case, had been hit by a van going 45 miles an hour while I sat unbuckled at a stop sign.
Each day, to curb inflammation and minimize pain, upon rising, I do some gentle stretching after I use the bathroom, then:
- Drink 1 quart of lukewarm water with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
- An hour later, I'll drink a warm shot glass of water and teaspoon of cayenne pepper (I hold it in my mouth and let saliva work up and then C A R E F U L L Y swallow. Yes, my eyes water a little, but I continue to breathe through my nose.
I will use the singing bowls to meditate for about an hour while I let the cayenne pepper work it's magic. Google "Cayenne Pepper Tea" and read for yourself. My first client each day, I say, must be me.
- Next up is a green smoothie: 4-8 bananas, 1 apple or piece of fruit, a handful of greens or 1/4 cup of herb like cilantro, parsley, basil, a teaspoon of cinnamon and yes, a pinch of cayenne.

Say what? You're playing in a salt cave?
*************************************************
Starting this year, I am excited to say I have joined the team of healing professionals at Soderworld Wellness and Healing Arts Center in Willowbrook, Illinois.
Soderworld is a unique wellness and healing arts facility founded by the Soderholm family. About a month ago, I contacted a massage therapist at Soderworld who had helped Kathy with a thumb overuse injury while we were at Borrowed Earth Cafe. I called her and told her that I was doing sound therapy now and as a "thank you," I wanted to treat her to a session.
She had a very powerful healing experience and gave me the number of one of the owners of Soderworld, former Major League baseball star, Eric Soderholm.
A few weeks later, I got to speak to Eric on the phone and a few days later, he came out to our home for a treatment...and, to my delight, he offered me a place at Soderworld. They are constructing a sound room that will be my home away from home...
Thank you, Eric and family!
A Salt Cave?
In addition to massage, reflexology, yoga, and a host of other treatment options, Soderworld has a Himalayan salt-lined cave.
Kathy had an intuition that the salt cave would be a great place to do sound therapy as well.
To test that theory out, a two weeks ago, I did a "test run" with six people in the cave and the experience was incredible.
Sound-wise and atmosphere-wise, the cave is one of the most powerful places I've ever played. The cave's rounded, salt-encrusted walls, the man-made stalactites, the four-inch deep loose sand flooring, the blackened ceiling dotted with white LED's to simulate a kind of dreamy starlight, plus the hanging chairs make it one of the best caves in the 'burbs. Now, add in the power of singing bowls, drums, rattles, flute, and voice and you have the perfect setting to really let go and release.
Salt itself is a powerful healing agent. According to Soderworld's website, "Himalayan Salt is believed to emit negative ions to help reduce stress, asthma and allergies. Along with naturally assisting healthy sleep patterns, reducing muscle cramps, supports normal respiratory, normal circulation, ultimate anti-oxidant, detoxifying benefits, and promotes absorption of nutrients and minerals the body needs."
Our test group of six said the experience was mind-blowing.
The people in the hanging chairs said they felt the sound waves all around and at times felt the chair was moving in slow circles and that I was moving around the room, but I assured them I'd stayed put at the front of the cave with my instruments.
I played for Chad Soderholm individually in the cave and I did move around him with the various instruments, sometimes placing them within inches of his body as he sat suspended in the air.
After, I had to shake him awake and he opened his eyes wide, "Whoa..." was all he could manage at first. "Just, whoa..."
The Soderholms gave me permission to utilize the cave for individuals or small group settings of up to eight while the sound room was being constructed.
Is Sound Therapy for You?
Singing bowls and sound therapy and traditional sounds using Earth-tuned frequencies are part of that. Like kidney stones that can be dissolved with specific frequencies and DNA repairs that are done using 528Hz trained on the gene. Both alternative and Western-medical practitioners are harnessing the power of sound in trying to create a positive impact on health.
Methyl gases react to sound and vibration and intention and during sound therapy, those gases are temporarily and sometimes permanently altered and some of the "soft coded," "gas-based" traits or behaviors, with intention, may experience a change for the positive. The "positive" or harmonic vibration signature in hertz and intention can direct a frequency into the body's waters and, like sonic therapy and frequency trained on kidneys can alleviate and dissolve kidney stones, certain frequencies and intention "trained" non-specifically on the body can shift or alter perceptions, provide clarity and insight and effectively illuminate or shine a light on behavior and it's core cause without trauma to the experiencer.
A shamanic sound journey who's intention is to change your vibration and, coupled with your intention, maybe part of the keys to freedom you've been searching for that lie hidden inside you.
Do something wonderful for yourself: Please call or text to book a session with me at the salt cave!
Happy New Year!
