Petroleum jelly primarily acts as a skin protectant by creating a barrier that prevents moisture loss and shields the skin from environmental irritants. It's an occlusive moisturizer, meaning it sits on top of the skin rather than penetrating it, and helps to keep existing moisture locked in. This can be beneficial for dry skin, minor cuts and scrapes, and even to protect skin from wind and cold.
