Sunday Horse Health Tip: Rain Rot Season is Here! 🐴🌧️

If you live in Tennessee, you know the weather lately has been nothing but hot, humid, and wet—which means conditions are perfect for one of the most common summertime skin issues in horses: rain rot.

Fun Fact: Rain rot isn’t actually caused by the rain itself! It’s caused by a bacteria called Dermatophilus congolensis that thrives when a horse’s skin stays damp for extended periods of time.

Watch for these signs:
🔹 Crusty scabs with hair attached
🔹 Small bumps along the back, topline, rump, or legs
🔹 Tender areas when grooming
🔹 Patchy hair loss

Treatment Tips:
✅ Keep your horse as dry as possible - towel dry the area after hosing
✅ Remove loose scabs gently
✅ Wash affected areas with an antimicrobial shampoo
✅ Clean grooming tools, blankets, and tack regularly
✅ Improve airflow and reduce prolonged exposure to moisture

⭐ Our favorite product for tackling rain rot is Fungasol® Shampoo and Treatment. We’ve had great success using it to help clear up skin issues and keep horses comfortable during Tennessee’s wet summer months.

The best treatment is always early treatment. A quick daily check can help catch rain rot before it becomes a bigger problem.

How are you keeping your horses comfortable through this Tennessee heat and humidity? Let us know below! 👇
