Project "quick sketch". I have never been comfortable as a designer sharing those imperfect "thought scratches". This is the beginning of a renovation exterior. The back of this house is where the "scratches will get interesting!! Thinking of a painted/distressed brick finish with stone and dark wood trim accents. Hmmm . . .
In many ways HGTV is wonderful. Especially great for consumers to gain ideas and dream. Scary when those same consumers think that it all falls together in 55 minutes plus commercials! .

Scribbles to an actual cottage plan. Today's adventure in design will be to take plan and revisit site to be sure all is correct and to check vertical measurements so that I can begin developing new cottage renovation.
Good Morning! If you have received an invitation to like my "page" on FB, it is because I would like you to be a part of my design world and share insights with you on the role of being a Registered Interior Designer.
Many of you aren't aware of what I do for a living or what it involves. Being a Registered Interior Designer is a wonderfully creative, challenging, and sometimes trying profession that can and does affect each one of your lives. If you have experienced a great space in a restaurant, school, hospital, concert hall, etc., then your life has been touched by an interior designer.
The traditional belief it that we choose paint colors, furniture selections, and "fluff" decor. Yep, I have done lots of that too. However, being an educated and registered interior designer I have done so much more than that - both commercially and residentially.
The field is much more architectural than it used to be. Plus, there are so many areas in which to specialize. Constant training and researching of trends, lifestyles, technology, and so much more are a continual part of my training. Being registered with the State of Tennessee by the same board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners doesn't make me an architect or engineer. However, it is part of my personal commitment to continue educating myself and others in ways to make their physical worlds better. This in turn can make your emotional worlds better too.
I work with architects, engineers, developers, collaborative designers, individual clients, and more. I can design homes - inside and out. I can work on interiors or commercial projects great and small. I can make uninhabitable spaces amazing. I know where my limitations end and when to call the architect or engineer to answer those important structural and mechanical questions. Yes, I am part of a great professional team with whomever I work.
Most who practice have philosophies and areas of special interest. One which is dear to my heart is Aging in Place and Universal Design. Homes and commercial spaces should work for us no matter what our health status or age. They should also be aesthetically pleasing and inviting. I care about Preservation. I care about progress with a heart for the past and present. I care about doing work that makes people happier and more satisfied with their environments.
I hope that this can become a forum where I share with you projects, processes, failures and successes of my chosen profession and to answer questions that you might have about various topics. Also philosophies and articles of interest.
Should you have a design questions or discussion topic, feel free to ask. Welcome to my world! I hope that you enjoy it!!
