Born on this day, July 1: Lena Pearl Mohler Dale
George Dale is probably best known as the editor of the Muncie Post-Democrat, where he bravely published revealing stories about the activities of the Ku Klux Klan in the city. And George blamed his outspokenness for the targeted harassment of his family. After he was elected mayor of the city in 1931, George tried to “clean house” of the corruption in the Muncie government. But the lesser known history is that George’s wife, Lena, fearlessly worked right alongside her husband while raising seven children—four daughters and three sons.
Lena Pearl Mohler was born in Hartford City on July 1, 1882. She moved to Muncie with George in 1916. Lena assisted with the operation of the Muncie Post-Democrat, and following her husband’s death in 1936, she served as its editor until her death in 1958. And, as the newspaper name suggests, Lena was actively involved in statewide Democrat politics for most of her life.
