Anyone who knew Daniel or met him for the first time soon realized he was a cowboy in every way. Daniel died on August 7, 2005, from injuries sustained at a PRCA rodeo on August 6. The night before he died, he lived one of his dreams. He had drawn D & H Cattle Company's bucking bull Crossfire Hurricane at the Idaho Falls PRCA Rodeo. Just to have the chance to put his rope on this great bull had hi
m on cloud 9. Though he did not ride Crossfire for eight seconds, he sure gave him heck for about five. He told a television reporter that night while being interviewed on television, “This is what I do. I'm going to keep doing it until I can't do it anymore.”
After being interviewed, two young boys asked him for his autograph, a first at a pro rodeo. Daniel pulled off his number from his vest, then asked them “What was your favorite event?” They both replied “Bull Riding.” When he realized that he needed something to sign for the other young boy, he crawled under the walkway to pick up a discarded number and signed it. Their faces were beaming and they were so excited. This rodeo only happens because of the outstanding corporate support through sponsorships and ticket sales from those who attend the rodeo every year. This event is a labor of love not only for his family, but for the committee members, and the countless volunteers, all of which were friends or family of Daniel. It is our goal and commitment to continue doing good things in his hometown and provide our community the opportunity to celebrate his life and the sport he so loved. The Daniel Dopps Memorial Rodeo is always the fourth full weekend in June.
