A Chicago basement apartment can extend to any depth below the floor grade as long as the space has sufficient protection from leakage. Floors and walls must be impervious to water pe*******on from both surface and underground water. Basement apartments must have a minimum ceiling height of 7 and a half feet.

Professional tip:
When it comes to water proofing remember this:
Look up. Look down.
Look all around.

Look up: make sure your gutters are working properly and are clear of debris so water doesn’t fall directly at the base of your home.

Look down: check that all downspouts or any discharges are the proper distance from the base of your home (8 to 10 feet).

Look all around: walk around the outside of your home checking for any puddling, settling or washouts.
