🇺🇸 July 4th 2026 Weather Update – Rowan County

If you’re spending time outdoors celebrating Independence Day today, please keep a close eye on the weather.

The National Weather Service in Jackson has placed Rowan County in a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather today, with the greatest potential for storms developing during the late afternoon and evening. The primary threat will be strong to damaging straight line winds, along with frequent lightning, heavy rainfall, and localized flooding in areas that receive multiple rounds of rain.

In addition, a Heat Advisory remains in effect. Heat index values are expected to be between 100° and 105°, so be sure to:
• Drink plenty of water.
• Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
• Check on children, older adults, and pets.
• Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle.

If thunderstorms approach:
• Have a reliable way to receive weather warnings from weather apps, Rowan Alert, or one of the many other options available.
• Move indoors when thunder is heard or a warning is issued.
• If you have outdoor activities planned, identify a sturdy shelter before storms develop.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Independence Day. We will continue monitoring conditions and provide updates as needed.

6/18/26 8AM Morehead - Rowan County Storm Update

We were fortunate to come through the storms with no reports of major damage at this time. While there have been scattered impacts across the county, our community has fared well overall.

Currently, approximately 1,829 electric meters remain without power:
• KU – 889
• Kentucky Power – 358
• Clark Energy – 273
• Grayson RECC – 222
• Fleming-Mason Energy – 87

At this time, there is no estimated restoration time for power. Utility crews are responding to outages across multiple counties and are working as quickly as possible to restore service.

Several county roads have trees down, and the Rowan County Road Department is actively working to clear them. The Kentucky Department of Transportation is also responding to remove trees from state maintained roadways. The Morehead City Public Works are assessing and clearing city streets as well.

Motorists should use caution on KY 519 near the 1100 block (Glover Glass & Lock), where a three phase power pole was damaged. KU crews are on scene replacing the pole and delays should be expected in the area.

We appreciate the continued efforts of our utility crews, road departments, first responders, and everyone working to restore normal operations. Thank you to our residents for your patience and cooperation as recovery efforts continue.
