What you need to know:

1. In the US it's illegal to SELL primates unless you hold a USDA license. This includes if you decide you can no longer look after your pet and you want to sell it. This is a federal offense!!! So ASK FOR A USDA LICENSE NUMBER and then check the person out with the USDA Aphis database that they are who they claim to be.

2. There are no $500 monkeys, no $750 monkeys, no $1,000 monkeys. These are primates which are very expensive to breed and raise so you will expect to pay thousands. Let that ring some alarm bells.

3. Scammer pages are often very obviously fraudulent. Most of the pictures have different backgrounds ( because they steal other peoples images ) - the phone number often doesn't match the area
they're supposed to be from and there is a lack of personal detail about the seller.

4. If you lost money to a scammer its WIRE FRAUD which is a federal offense in the US and carries very heavy penalties. Report it to the FBI. The USDA has asked us to advise people to do this. The more scammers who get caught the more it will deter others.

5, The desire to get a monkey now and be able to afford one is often our biggest enemy. It bypasses discretion and caution. Nobody wants to wait, nobody wants to pay more, but when that bug bites just imagine sitting there with no monkey and no money or a sick monkey you bought off that nice man on the Internet because you didn't really want to wait. People have to deal with this all the time and its heartbreaking. Better to find your breeder, research them, talk to them, save up and wait till they have a baby for you. We see the old quote "Act in haste, repent as leisure" come true every week. Let your desire to care for a monkey be your best friend not your worst enemy.
