The R230 SL55 AMG is one of the best bad bargains in the used market. The M113K is not the part that should scare you.

The RX-8 ten-foot move is a trap. Cold-start it, shut it down immediately, and the next start can turn miserable. Let the rotary warm up first. Rotary owners: what other tiny rule does every new owner learn the hard way?

You're scrolling through listings at midnight and there it is — a 2005 Spec B with 130k miles for under $8,000. Six-speed, turbocharged flat-four, the sedan Subaru pretended didn't exist. You start telling yourself it's basically a Legacy GT with better suspension and a shorter final drive. You're already picking out wheels in your head.

Then reality hits around week three of ownership.

The Spec B wasn't just a trim level — it was Subaru throwing every performance part they had at a platform that aged hard. The SI-Drive system gets finicky, the Bilstein struts are shot on every example left, and good luck sourcing the specific six-speed transmission parts when third gear starts crunching. These cars didn't just depreciate, they deferred maintenance into whoever bought them next. That $8,000 listing turns into $8,000 plus a $4,500 stack of repairs you didn't see coming because the PPI looked "mostly clean."

The turbo seals, the banjo bolt filters nobody cleaned, the ringland failures that plague every EJ255 — it all converges somewhere between 120k and 150k miles like clockwork. And because Spec B parts aren't interchangeable with standard Legacy GT parts half the time, you're hunting forums and paying JDM import prices for components.

Does that mean nobody should buy one? Nah. If you already wrench on Subarus and you know what the EJ platform demands, a Spec B is genuinely one of the most underrated sport sedans of its era. But if you're coming in cold thinking you found a deal — you didn't find a deal. You found someone else's exit strategy.

Save this for when you're shopping.
