Here’s wishing our friend Ed Stout a very happy 90th birthday! One of the most energetic and passionate people I’ve ever known, Ed became legendary as an extraordinarily talented pipe organ technician—one of the fussiest and most musical I’ve ever encountered. His wit and humor are equally renowned. A gathering of friends surprised him with a party on Sunday, and after regaining his composure, he very fittingly said, “It takes a hell of a lot to make ME speechless.”

Ed deserves our deepest thanks and appreciation for his marvelous contributions to our musical world, our craft, and our lives. Happy Birthday, EMS III!

Here’s a musical gem for the day: Buddy Cole plays his composition “Every Time I See You I’m in Love Again” on solo piano as part of the Bing Crosby-Rosemary Clooney Show on CBS radio. I’m constantly inspired by Buddy’s incredible harmonies and superlative musicianship. His piano playing was as wonderful as his organ work.

I recently had the pleasure of playing for a three-day organ and keyboard session at the fabulous Bandrika Studios for an upcoming album for the incredible band OK Go. They were SO MUCH fun to work with in a collaborative environment, and the Wurlitzer and other instruments got a big workout and are being incorporated into the album in fun and surprising ways. (If you don’t know about OK Go, PLEASE check out their YouTube videos, which are INSANE.) It was a huge honor to work with these talented guys.

Bandrika is truly a musician’s creative playground — as you can see! And who would have thought that Wurlitzer theatre pipe organs would find new life in pop music and movie scores nearly one hundred years after their intended use ended. Huge thanks to Nathan Barr for his vision and passion to save and promote this truly awesome instrument and for creating such a magical place for musicians.
