The past few months I’ve had the privilege of working alongside local organizers who have been fighting for the Salem Public Library for years, some for decades. I feel so lucky to have met so many incredible folks, and to be in a city that truly deeply loves their library.

I don’t know whether measure 24-514 will pass or fail. I feel cautiously optimistic. What I do know for sure is that no matter what happens, there is work to be done here in Salem. Our library is an essential public good, and it is too crucial a service to be anything other than fully funded and thriving.

No matter where you’re at, I hope you look into your local politics and community care programs! Federally in the United States the horrors continue, and there are folks taking advantage of your lack of attention to local issues. Now is a great time to pick a local struggle and lock in. Attend your neighborhood association meeting! Or watch your city council or school board meeting stream on YouTube! Here in Salem we have the lovely folks at keeping us all in the loop.

Salem voters, your ballots are due before 8pm this evening. I believe in us. 📚♥️
