VO Tip: One of the biggest mistakes new voice actors make is treating a script like it’s something you simply read. That’s not the job. Your job is to interpret the message and make it sound like a real human being had the thought.

Here’s a simple way to practice:
First, read the script silently and ask yourself a few questions:
Who am I talking to?
Why am I saying this?
What do I want them to do or feel?

Now read it out loud once, like you normally would. Then do something different: paraphrase it in your own words. Seriously. Say the same idea, but the way you would naturally say it to a friend. That helps your brain understand the intent instead of getting stuck on the exact wording.

Then go back to the script and perform it again — but this time keep that natural thought process in your head. Suddenly, the read feels less like you’re “announcing copy” and more like you’re sharing a thought. And that’s the sweet spot in voiceover.

Remember: clients aren’t hiring you to prove you can read.
They’re hiring you to make the message sound real.
