Our modern day celebration of Christmas has become so commercialized that it is destructive. We trash the planet with excessive buying; environmental destruction and consumerism that has surpassed the origins of giving food and clothing to survive the dark winter months.

I remind myself this is a time of giving to those who are most in need. These traditions are rooted in the practices of the real St. Nicholas, who lived in Myra in the fourth century A.D. He was born rich and inherited a great deal of money, ALL of which he gave away to save many from starvation.

The days are short and nights are long. As we bring our life-giving trees into our homes to light up our houses with warmth and love; let us remember that plastic toys eventually break, kids rapidly grow out of new clothes, and we all end up with that one regifted yankee candle!
