If you’re wondering what your thyroid does, it might be easier to ask what it doesn’t do. The thyroid is a small gland at the front of the neck that produces hormones that affect numerous functions and nearly every organ in the body, and we can’t live without it.
Thyroid function is tested and monitored with a blood test. TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) is made in the brain and regulates the production of our thyroid hormones. Checking this gives us insight into whether the thyroid is producing enough hormone or not. There are other tests that dive a little deeper into the thyroid function that may also be ordered, especially if the TSH is outside of the normal range.
High levels of TSH mean your thyroid is underactive, or hypothyroidism. Very low levels of TSH are the opposite, hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism is more common than hyper. Some symptoms of hypothyroidism are cold hands and feet, fatigue, dry skin, weight gain and constipation.
Thyroid problems can be autoimmune. In fact, Hashimotos (autoimmune hypothyroidism) is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the US and it is most common in middle aged women.
Hypothyroidism needs to be treated with medication. As with most things, eating a healthy, whole food-based diet and getting regular exercise helps our bodies function better. If you have an autoimmune condition, avoiding inflammatory foods (gluten, dairy, highly processed) is even more important.
