Washing your vehicle will not remove the contaminants on the paint. If you're vehicle has embedded contaminants such as iron(brake dust), industrial fallout, tree sap, bug guts, bird droppings, road tar, paint overspray, and mineral deposits, they must be removed with a decontamination process, iron remover and claying, before adding wax, paint sealant or ceramic coating.

Otherwise you're not protecting the paint. Your protecting all the imperfections on top of your paint. Over time those contaminants damage your paint so it is important to get em removed.
