The Jewish Museum Milwaukee is dedicated to preserving and presenting the history of the Jewish people in southeastern Wisconsin and celebrating the continuum of Jewish heritage and culture. The history of American Jews is rooted in thousands of years of searching for freedom and equality. We are committed to sharing this story and the life lessons it brings with it, so that we may enhance the public’s awareness and appreciation of Jewish life and culture.

Emma Lazarus left a lasting mark on American literature while using her voice to champion immigrants and humanitarian causes. Born to Portuguese-Jewish parents of Sephardi descent, she gained early recognition as a writer with her work attracting the attention of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

In 1883 Lazarus composed her most famous poem, “The New Colossus,” advocating acceptance of immigrants to America. Its famous lines, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” were engraved on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty in 1903.

Emma Lazarus' portrait is featured in 48 Jews: Layers of Identity currently on display at JMM. Learn more here: https://loom.ly/zMB2uAg
